Some “Hot” Summer Reading Tips

Thumbs Up
You are all getting a big “thumbs-up” from me on your summer reading! Woohoo for you!!! I am so glad that I have heard from many of you already this summer. I am totally thrilled to hear about all the great books you are enjoying! Many of you have been using your Someday Lists to get new titles to read. Hopefully, if you need a new book to read, you’ll visit the comments sections of our blog to help get you some new titles.

I love how one of our SB friends mentioned that he and his mom are reading a book…together! I LOVE THAT!!! He has taken on a pretty challenging book to read. Have you ever done that? I know that when I’m reading something a bit more difficult or confusing, it really helps to talk to someone who has read or is reading the book, too. It gives us a chance to ask questions…Did you understand that part? What does this mean? What do you think will happen next? How did that happen? It’s like having your own personal book club…created by you! I noticed that another SB friend mentioned how he and his family are spending time reading together. That comment made me smile, because it’s a fantastic way to spend quality family time together. What cool ideas! Let me know if anyone else decides to do some of their reading with others. I’d like to hear about it!

I’ve been playing this really cool word game app on my phone. It’s called Word Search for Kids, and it was free to download. It’s pretty fun because it’s basically a word search game…which I totally love!!! I have been playing it when I have a few minutes here or there. My favorite part about the game is it tells me how fast I completed the word search puzzle. I’m pretty competitive, so I like to see if I can beat my best time on each game. Let me know if you try it out!

I just finished reading “Stranded” and “Ghost of Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen. I’d give both books 5 stars, for sure. If you like whales and animal rescues, you will really like “Stranded.” “Ghost of Spirit Bear” is the sequel to “Touching Spirit Bear,” one of my very favorite books of all times. I will probably do something with these books in my class next year, along with some other Ben Mikaelsen books. I’m even thinking an author study on him would be really cool. Did you know that he used to have a 700-pound black bear named Buffy? He’s a very fascinating author and man. That’s why I’m thinking we will learn more about him next year!

  1. Hi Mrs. Kraus!!! It sounds like you’ve been really busy this summer with reading, writing, and playing word games!

I just finished reading two fantasy books based on a futuristic Cinderella. The first title is Cinder, and the second book is called Scarlet. Marissa Meyer is the author of these Lunar Chronicles, and she is a very talented author. At first, I didn’t think I would enjoy them because I’m not really a fan of fairy tales. However, once I started, I couldn’t stop!!! The suspense was so intense that I had to find out what was going to happen next to Cinder, Emporer Kai, Scarlet, and the other characters. It’s crazy to think about people being part machine or having special powers (i.e., mind reading)…and these books have them all.

The only bad thing: the third book will be released in 2014, and the fourth book will be released in 2015. I WANT TO READ THEM NOW!

It has been a very busy summer! I think you’ve been busy like me with all the reading and writing you’re doing, Mrs. Allen. The book, Cinder, is on my Someday List. Miss Shammas recommended it to me, too. Since you both loved it, I know that I will love it! What a great way to get new books to read…just by sharing what you like, right? I’ll have to check out the sequel, as well. I love a good, clever twist on the Cinderella story. Hmmm…that gives me some good writing ideas. Thanks for sharing! Happy reading:)

Hello Mrs. Kraus! I just came along to see if you replied or if you a new post. I am reading “The Name of this Book is Secret” and you probably know it is by psedonomoes bosch (he spells his name with lowercase letters so I will do that too.) I got it two days ago and I am on page 119. What are you reading? Did you finish Stranded? What did you rate it? I finished up The Inside Story (#8) and gave it four stars. I will probably give it last. I could not get The Council of Mirrors at both library’s b\c they were out. I also checked out Words in the Dust.

Hi!!! I love hearing about all the great reading you’re doing this summer! I know how much one of the girls in our class loved the pseudonymous bosch books…I’m glad to hear you’re liking them, too. The series is on sale at Wal-Mart. I saw them there yesterday. I’m thinking I might need to buy some for my classroom library. What do you think?

I did finish Stranded. I’d give it a 4-5 star rating, for sure! I will blog about my recent readings, so you’ll have to check them out.
